Our Mission

The mission of The Michael & Elaine Butter Foundation is to help raise the standard of living of the impoverished citizens of La Romana by offering financial, educational, medical and social support. Our immediate goal is to finish building the school on the land we have just purchased. Our long term goal is to create a strong sense of community among the residents and teach economic sustainability within the community. Funds raised by the foundation are allocated to several of our own charitable initiatives by our board of directors, a rotating group of responsible community members. As a result of this unique structure, former recipients of charity can become benefactors themselves, setting into motion a perpetuation of our charitable efforts.

Michael & Elaine Butter began traveling to Casa de Campo in La Romana, Dominican Republic over a decade ago.  An avid tennis player, Mr. Butter soon knew many of the tennis staff personally and became concerned with their living conditions and health care.  After several years of helping individual cases, Mr. Butter and Mrs. Butter believed their assistance would be better utilized as a formal charity and The Michael & Elaine Butter Foundation was officially founded on December 13th, 2009.

How We Help

A brief listing on way that we help the local community.

Community School

Our prime goal is to build a new school for the 140 students who now use a broken down building as their school. The student population is a mix of Dominican and Haitian refugee children from age 3 to 14. Their current facility is so small that some children sit and stand outside the window areas to listen in since there is no room inside. The school receives no government funding and is solely run by the charity of our Foundation members and The Foundation itself. We have procured an 800 square meter lot that will serve as the location of the new school. We are in need of donations to help finish the construction of the school. The current construction fundraising goal is $150,00.

Please take some time to view the pictures below that illustrate the conditions of the current school.

Educational Support

Husband and wife, Santos and Zeneida De Salas had the vision of helping teach some children who are not assigned to regular public or private school. The only school in their neighborhood is so run down and dangerous that teachers will not work there. The many (50%-60%) Haitian students will not go to a public school since they have no legal documents and parents fear deportation.

Every year under the direction of Elaine Butter, the Michael Butter foundation buys school supplies such as: notebooks, pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, educational posters and books for teachers who are volunteers. This year The Foundation bought chairs because students were sitting on wood, metal cans and concrete blocks. We also hired another teacher to assist Mrs. De Salas who had been teaching all 155 children by herself.

Below are some photos from the 2011 annual Christmas lunch.

Food Support

Some of the most needy members of the La Romana community, including elderly people, the disabled and impoverished children receive a monthly grocery delivery, tailored to their specific needs.  Additionally, a larger group of people and families receive food baskets delivered by volunteers during the Christmas holidays to ensure that they have something to celebrate as well.

Health Insurance

The Foundation has provided full health coverage through Humano Insurance for all of the Casa de Campo tennis staff and their family members, in total, nearly 60 people. This would not have been possible without several generous donations. This year alone we have raised over $8000 for community health insurance.

Facts about the Dominican republic

La Romana

La Romana, Dominican Republic is the capital city of the province of La Romana.  The population has been rapidly expanding in this area in the past twenty years due to industry and tourism.[1] Many families from originally agricultural backgrounds have emigrated to La Romana.  Although there are jobs to be had in the free trade zone and the tourism industry, many people are underemployed and are unable to properly feed, cloth, educate and provide health care for themselves and their families.

Even though the Dominican Republic offers free heath care to many of the people, the problem is that most do not know how to access the information. Many are illiterate and therefore the applications for health care are impossible.

Education in the Dominican Republic is officially free and compulsory between the ages of 5 and 14, but in many cases school fees and other costs such as uniforms, books and meals make education prohibitively expensive for the nation’s poor.  Additionally, many schools in  rural areas do not have proper materials and furnishings and can be too far away for much of the population to be able to attend.[2]
